Valentine's Day

For some, Valentine's day is the most romantic day of the year. Restaurants are fully booked months in advance for the occasion while chocolates and teddy bears fill the stores. Couples will spend the day together and gift each others presents, flowers, and chocolates.

Valentine's day has become a worldwide phenomenon and has a enormous economic impact. It is believed that people have spend around 23.9 billion dollars for Valentine's day in 2022.

Origin

Valentine's day started off as a celebration Feast in honor of multiple martyrs named Valentine. Pope Gelasius declared it as a Christian "holiday" named St. Valentine's day. Like other Christian holidays, it was chosen to be held on February 14th as another celebration was already set on February 15th. The Lupercalia, a celebration of fertility was already a commonly celebrated day. Some believe that the romantic side of the holiday started because of its similar date to Lupercalia. Others believe another legend based on a Roman priest named Valentine who officiated weddings for Roman soldiers even when it was forbidden by the Roman emperor. He would wear a Cupid ring so that the soldiers could recognize him. Which then started the Valentine's day we know today.

In 1969, St. Valentine's feast was removed from the Christian liturgical calendar for lack of reliable information about him. As so many legends started around the Saint and the celebration, it became harder to trace it back to its true origin.
