The origin of the stocking stuffers comes from an old poem called " A visit from Saint Nicholas" and the old legend of the Saint Nicholas. One night he helped a poor family whose daughters were to be wed but their father could not afford their dowry. Saint Nicholas offered to help the family but, the father refused as he did not want to accept any charity. That night, once the family was asleep, Saint Nicholas threw gold coins into the chimney that then fell into the daughter's stocking that were hung on the fireplace to dry. The next morning, the family discovered the coins and celebrated Saint Nicholas generosity. As time went by, the story transformed into balls of gold instead of gold coins which then turned into oranges, a stocking stuffer that is still popular to this day!
Gifting oranges became popular during the great depression as parents could not afford to buy Christmas gifts so they turned to this fruit that was not as common and easy to find at the time. Getting an orange at Christmas was even considered a luxury!
The tradition used to be held on Saint Nicholas day but it is now often done during Christmas eve as well.
Here is a list of wotever inc.'s top picks of stocking stuffers!
