Canada Day weekend is almost here! During the long weekend, Canadians celebrate the holiday with Fireworks shows, Concerts, Barbecues, Parades, festivals, and more!
Canada Day was first introduced back in 1867. On July 1st 1867, The North American British Colonies (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and a mix of Ontario and Quebec merged together to create Canada as we know it today. The holiday was first called the British North America Act, and was quickly changed to the Dominion Day. It was first established as a National Holiday in 1879, and was called the Anniversary of Confederation, then also changed to Dominion Day. It was then changed again in October 1982 to Canada Day since the name was still too Colonial in the eyes of the Canadian population. The name change happened the same year as the separation of UK's authority from Canada, when Canada first became an independent country.
July 1st 2017 marked the 150th year anniversary of Canada Day!
Each year, the biggest Canada Day celebration takes place in the country's Capital Ottawa. For 50 years, the celebration took place on Parliament Hill, it was moved last year due to renovations. It is now being hosted at LeBreton Flats Park. The celebration will be starting at 9am and will include music, animations, and shows from various Canadian Artists as well as the Tim Horton's fireworks show at 10pm, which will also be broadcasted on multiple TV platforms. The evening music show this year is called "Canada Day: A Playlist to celebrate". The two artists headlining are Jann Arden and Tyler Shaw, their show will be followed by various other Canadian Artists.
